The mouth and face contain several nerves which give you sensation and control your muscles. Surgical procedures close to these nerves can damage/cut them. Damage to a nerve controlling muscles results in loss of control of the supplied muscle. Damage to a nerve that gives sensation results in persistent numbness in the area supplied by the nerve.
